i'm just real torn about halloween. when brian meares and i first set up shop as real homeowning grown-ups, we'd hang ghost lights in the shrubs, serve soup in carved out pumpkins and we'd have a party where he'd dress like hugh hefner because he'd take any excuse to walk around in a silky robe flanked by girls. my friends and i would heat up cider with bourbon and wait on the sofa, shrieking when every little person approached the doorbell.
but now, we usually board up - lights off, door locked... sometimes even leaving all together. i dunno - the grinch of halloween got us. and i admit, i'm a bit afraid of little people. i don't know what to say to them. a friend gave me some great advice once for conversing with kids: just ask them if they like sharks. Yes, then say 'you're so brave!'. No, then say 'they are scary, aren't they!'. it's served me well.
here's the upside of this story. i bought three pumpkins yesterday. there's a tiny halloween size crack opening up in me to let the glowing pumpkin light through. last night i grazed pinterest for my favorite pumpkin DIYs - now i just need to decide which one to keep this holiday spirit burning bright.
